Winter Window Box Ideas - Holiday Decorating

Winter is a time when many window box enthusiasts leave their window boxes empty and barren. This is unfortunate, especially since there are many ideas you can use to decorate your window boxes in the winter. Winter is a fun and arresting time to try some decorating ideas for the holidays that you just can't pull off in the Spring or Summer. Here are some winter window box ideas for decorating and gardening. You can either plant flowers, plants, and vines that thrive in the winter or you can select to go with a decorating theme for the Holiday season. Here's three of my beloved ideas:

1. Winter Window Box Vines: My two personal beloved vines for cold winter are Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy. Both do very well in cold winter weather and both are climbing vines that are ideal for not only decorating your window boxes, but creating coverage that can spread across your entire house. During the Fall season and important into winter these vines can often turn a reddish orange color manufacture them ideal for the Holiday season. An alternative to climbing vines is hanging vines. Potato vine is a great hanging vine that will generate a flow out of the box and a different look than your climbers will and is other beloved that does well year round.

Holiday

2. Winter Window Box Flowers: Primroses and Pansies are a few choices for perennial flowers for winter window boxes. Gorgeous blue and white flowering Forget-Me-Not flowers can make a great holiday display in your window boxes or you can go with a Christmas theme of red pansies and green ivy. Most winter flowers need to be planted in the Spring or Summer or they can be purchased in the winter from a local nursery and then placed in your window box. Some winter ferns also work well to bring a holiday look to your windowboxes.

3. Holiday Decorating Ideas for Window Boxes: Lots of population will opt for a no maintenance explication During the winter and will empty out their flowers, plants, and vines to put in place a ornamental display instead. This can involve using wreaths, holly, or evergreen branches placed within your window box to give it a ornamental appearance. The use of pine cones, Christmas ball ornaments, ribbons, fake white foam snow balls, and Christmas lights are also other ideas you can use to give your window box a holiday feel.

There is no limit to the imagination you can use for decorating window boxes in the winter. Winter might be one of the best times of the year where you can truly let loose in terms of adding a miniature bit of personalization and creativity to your window planters. Good luck and have fun!

The Elf on a Shelf - 10 Sets of Mischievous Ideas For Adding Magic to Your Holiday Season

The Elf on the Shelf Christmas and Elf Magic traditions are sweeping the nation -- for good reason. They offer a delightful way to build excitement for the holidays, and keep children on their best behavior. Here is how they work.

The "official" Elf on the Shelf, Elf Magic Elf or a someone else elf, arrives at your home early in the Christmas season to spend the holidays with your family.

Holiday

Each night the Elf on a Shelf returns to the North Pole, while your children are sleeping, to narrative to Santa with regard to their behavior.

While the Elf on the Shelf Elves have a more staid reputation, the Elf Magic Elves are a mischievous bunch, and have a tendency to make a mess or pull a crazy stunt while every person is asleep. Your kids will love to wake up each morning and see what trouble the Elf got into the night before.

Here are ten ideas found around the internet and from local families to inspire your elf:

Elves Love to Do What Your Kids Love To Do

Elves adapt fast to a household, and many mornings are found busy with the beloved activities of the kids who live there. Reading beloved books, playing games (including the Wii or Nintendo Ds), having a tea party with best-loved dolls, and riding skateboards are all beloved Elf past times.

Elves Are Into Computers and public Media

Elves in homes with teens have been known to have email, Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep an online eye on the kids and send funny emails, status updates and tweets. Many elves also seem to surf the internet late at night, seeing fun new sites for the kids to enjoy.

Elves Love to be in Pictures

Apparently, Elves are very good at self portraits. Many families have found their digital cameras full of pictures of their Elves in all kinds of crazy poses.

Elves Often Have A Driver's License

If an Elf cannot be found in the morning, the car is the first place to look. Elves are often found in the driver's seat, sitting on a stack of pillows or books. The car may be parked backwards or in a crazy position, and in some cases even down the road or in a neighbor's driveway. Typically, Christmas music is blaring through the speakers and the gas tank is mysteriously closer to empty than before.

Elves Write in Journals

Elves and children often learn more about each other and build bonds by writing letters back and forth. Some Elves arrive with a festively decorated journal to keep all the correspondence in one place. It has been rumored that some Elves only write backwards, so children must hold the note up to the mirror to read it. A few are conversant in Pig Latin or other codes that older kids must decipher.

Elves Tell Potty Jokes, Too

Bathroom humor spans all languages and species. Elves love to turn the toilet water green (with food coloring), decorate Christmas trees in underwear, toilet paper kids rooms or whole houses, and write on bathroom mirrors with mom's lipstick.

Elves Spell Their Names - Everywhere!

Each Elf has a name. Some are named by the children they watch. Others arrive with a note introducing the Elf. Either way, all Elves seem to love to leave their signature as often as possible. Maybe the Elf's name is written in Cheerios, flour, or chocolate syrup on the counter. Other times in toothpaste on the bathroom mirror. Best of all, in food coloring on freshly fallen snow.

Elves Love Things That Remind Them of Home

Cotton ball snowball fights are a beloved past time of elves. Also, Elves often make elf sized snow angels. If real snow is not available, then Insta-Snow or flour make good substitutes. A beloved game for Elves is Candy Lane. If the house does not already have a copy, Elves have been known to bring one from the North Pole as an early Christmas gift.

Elves Do Not always Come Alone

What could be best than an Elf on the Shelf? several Elves, of course. That means the mischief can multiply and children awake to explicate scenes of Elf mayhem. Maybe a poker game or baseball or football match or a play with Elves in costume (borrowed from other dolls).

Elves Play With Their Neighbor Elves

So many families have their own Elf on a Shelf during the holidays that Elves join with neighbor Elves to growth the fun. Many neighbor elves have been waiting together at the bus stop for their children to arrive. Other Elves host a Christmas party for neighborhood kids.

As you can see, the possibilities are endless for your elf tradition. Happy Holidays!

Christmas Song Games Can Liven Up Your Holiday

While it can be fun to carol or sing holiday songs, Christmas song games are a great selection for livening up any event or get together. Rather than plainly reciting original holiday songs, Christmas song games will require you to have fun when singing or playing. If you regularly have a house game night, you can use holiday games during the month of December. On the other hand these games can also be a lot of fun for Christmas parties at a child's school or even at an adult party. There are some distinct games to select from.

One of the most popular Christmas song games is the photo game. In this game you look at pictures that offer clues to the title or lyrics of the song. Each team takes turns trying to identify the literal, song to match the pictures. There is a scoring law with this game and the team with the highest score wins.

Holiday

If you like games that require you to act out there is a Christmas game you are sure to enjoy. In this game you take turns drawing the names of holiday songs and trying to act out the song for others to guess. There is a time limit and you are not allowed to talk when acting out your hints. However, if your teammates can guess what song you are acting out, you get a point.

Another fun game for Christmas parties is the humming song. Once again you draw the title of a song that your team members must guess. However, in this game you are required to hum a distinct verse or chorus to the song. Your teammates have to guess based on the sounds you make. The team that guesses the most songs correctly wins the game.

All of these games are sure to add a lot of fun to any holiday party.

Creative Holiday Gift Ideas for Your Boss

Halloween has come and gone, so you know what that means: we have entered the surprisingly swift slide towards the long holiday season. Before you know it, you'll be looking turkeys and then Santas pop up everywhere. Instead of waiting until the last minuscule - again - to do your holiday gift shopping, start now, while you still have time to think up something creative.

Why not start your brainstorming with your boss? After all, he or she is one of the reasons you still have a job this holiday season, while so many less fortunate population out there will be spending their holiday sending out resumes and request Santa for a new position. Take a look at these four great gift ideas for your boss.

Holiday

1. Get the rest of the crew in on it

One thing you can do for your boss that he or she will be sure to appreciate is to get the rest of your workplace in on the fun. You can chip in together to offer your boss something particularly nice, such as an airplane mark to your boss's beloved holiday destination, or even a cruise. If your boss is a sports fan, get him or her a merge tickets of premiere seats for the big game. Of course, this only works if you have a big sufficient office to afford such a gift.

For something less high-priced that everybody can be involved in, offer your boss a framed poster with all of the team's signatures nearby it.

2. Gag gifts

Gag gifts are great fun - if your boss has a good sense of humor, and your relationship is such that you know your boss will enjoy a humorous or even raunchy gift.

Two words of caution about gag gifts, however. First, if you're not sure if your boss would find it funny - if you find yourself hesitating even a minuscule bit, wondering if this is undoubtedly such a good idea - don't do it. The last thing you want to do is offer something that you hoped would earn a laugh, and instead it earns a scowl. Second, if you're going to offer a gag gift to your boss, make sure it's something unique and personal, such as an item that is reminiscent of an office inside joke. What you don't want is something generically funny that will end up in the wastebasket by January 15.

3. Of-the-month Clubs

"Of-the-month" clubs are excellent gifts that keep on giving. From more original book-of-the-month clubs to more unique subscriptions, such as wine-of-the-month or pie-of-the-month clubs, the chances are you can find an of-the-month club that fits your boss's hobbies and lifestyle.

Does your boss dote on his or her dogs? consider a dog-treat-of-the-month club, where your boss will receive custom-baked dog treats for Rover and Fido every month. Does your boss like gardening? A garden-of-the-month club will supply your boss with gardening tools and bulbs each month.

4. Get your boss to relax

Your boss probably needs a opportunity to relax and unwind as much as whatever else in the office. A great gift is a visit to a spa or massage studio, where your boss will be given a opportunity to deeply relax and let go of stress. From incommunicable massage therapists who will come right to the office to visit your boss in the middle of a busy day, to upscale day spas where your boss can spend a day or a whole weekend, spas and massages make great, unique gifts for your boss.

Child Custody Schedules - Ideas for a Holiday and Summer Custody program

Child custody schedules often take into consideration non-school days such as 3-day weekends, thanksgiving recess, spring break, winter break, special holidays and summer recess. It is base for divorced parents to split the minor child's non-school days even in situations where the parents do not have joint corporal custody and do not share custody on an equal basis while the school year. In cases where there is clearly a custodial and noncustodial parent, sharing the holidays and breaks or non-school days allows both parents to have a meaningful relationship with frequent and continuous contact with their children even though the parents are divorced and may no longer live close to one other other.

There are many dissimilar holiday and summer child custody schedules that can be implemented that allows the minor child to spend an equal estimate of time with each parent. Each situation is unique so the best holiday and summer parenting plan for one house may not be the best for other family. The holiday and summer custody agenda should reflect what's best for the children and will typically take into consideration many factors along with but not limited to the age of the children, relationship minor child has with each parent, work schedules, length between parent's homes and more. This report provides example holiday and summer child custody schedules which can be modified agreeing to your situation and what would be in the best for your children.

Holiday

50/50 Summer Break Schedule
It's base for parents to share time with their children over the summer break. The summer holiday is regularly the longest break while a school year. School breaks are often 5-8 weeks or 2-3 months between May and September. while the summer break parents can alternate weeks, alternate every two weeks, or continue with the regular agenda and add larger blocks of time for a vacation duration with each parent.

50/50 Holiday Schedule
It's also base for parents to share time with their children on holidays. A base holiday agenda is where one parent has the child in even-numbered years and the other parent has the child in odd-numbered years for a single holiday. Some holidays such as Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break or Christmas Break, Spring Break may be split in half each year or alternate years between parents. This depends on the house and what works best for the children and house dynamic.

Other special Days
While courts often supply parenting guidelines which frame base days or holidays observed, there legitimately is no set proper as each house may celebrate dissimilar holidays or have special days they observe. Parents can be creative and comprise any day they mutually agree on such as the parent's birthday, child's birthday, Halloween, 4th of July, etc.

With a limited plan and creativity one can come up with a child custody agenda that evenly divides holidays, special days, summer and non-school days between parents so the minor child can spend an equal estimate of time with each parent. Each house is unique so the type of parenting plan chosen and how the child spends time with each parent may vary between homes but should ultimately reflect what's best for the children and sustain and encourage a healthy and loving relationship with both parents.

A private Santa Gift Idea - 25 Surreptitous Holiday Gifts

Just this past year, I needed a incommunicable Santa gift idea when my husband's house tried out a form of the incommunicable Santa gift exchange. 5 Ways to Get Back on Track After the Holiday Madness

Getting back on track after the holidays is easy for some people. It seems as though they never break head somewhere at holiday time. It is barely a blip on the screen of their lives.

For others though getting back in the swing of things after the holidays is a bit of a challenge and can leave you feeling let down and out of sorts.

Holiday

All the stress, hustle and bustle seem to come crashing to a halt the day after Christmas and we often feel as though we are in a holding pattern until New Years Eve.

Routines have been broken. Eating habits have been tossed right out the window and even if the scale has been a friend it seems to have been quickly become a foe as we dread looking what the excess in fat has cost us in weight gain.

New Year's resolutions may be sitting there staring back from the paper daring us to fail one more time. So how do we get ourselves back in the swing again? How do we shake off the after holiday blues and look send to the coming weeks? Oh and yes how do we get back on track with our eating?

1. Don't feel the same pressure to make the holiday disappear as you did getting all the decorations up and the place decked out in the first place. Tackle most of the mess such as the presents and all the paper and garbage first. This will help you to derive a limited order out of the chaos. After that, take your time deconstructing the holiday decorations. Enjoy the beauty you have created just a limited longer. If you have truly been running like crazy this holiday season, taking a occasion to quietly appreciate what you have created is important.

2. Take an evening to either sit and write your thank you notes or to just phone a few of the friends you may not have had time to speak to while the crazy holiday season. The pressure to reach out and touch every person while the holidays is gigantic and can leave us feeling as though we haven't met our responsibilities if anyone is left out. The pleasure of a relaxed conversation or expressing sincere appreciation in a note almost abruptly lifts your spirits.

3. Don't even bother with the scale. If you have clothes that you like and they fit you well, take a few key pieces to mix and match as your eating habits get back on track over the next few weeks. After the over indulgence of the holiday season gently get yourself back into wholesome eating. Pare down your shopping list eliminating all the snacks and junk foods that may have been the holiday staples. Increase the fruits and vegetables as well as adding in large green salads. It may take a few days or even a week to retrain your taste buds. They have grown accustomed to more fat and sugar so give them a limited time to readjust.

4. If your workout has gone by the wayside do not try to get up to full speed in a week's time. Start back gently and work up to where you were before the holiday interruption. If you have been quarterly in your workouts before the holiday you will be back in the swing of it in no time and without suffering with soreness or fatigue.

5. Do something nice for yourself. Something special. It may be a quiet evening meal with your essential other or it may be massage or facial. It may be a weekend away or an afternoon out in nature. anyone feeds your soul and makes you feel uplifted is what you are looking for here. It doesn't have to cost a penny or if you have the money to spend go ahead enjoy. What you want is to leave the season finally feeling relaxed and looking send to what the New Year will bring.

They seem to unmistakably enjoy looking at baby photographs and talking about babies

Late stage dementia

Although persons in any stage of dementia will enjoy this, the gift of hand lotion is particularly beneficial to those in the late stage. Arousing their senses is stimulating. Any kind of lotion will do. Just be aware of any allergies or pain issues they might have. If they can tolerate it, those with a pleasant scent work well. Give them a relaxing hand massage talking about how good the hand massage feels and maybe about the good old days, as well. The conversation might seem one sided. Dementia folks in the latter stages of these diseases still enjoy the company and the conversation.

A gift certificate for respite care

If the dementia man is still living at home, this is a huge undertaking by members of the family. Giving them a break, by offering to care for your dementia friend is appreciated but rarely asked for

If you can afford it, many nursing homes, with dementia units, offer short term respite care for those with Alzheimer's disease or someone else dementia. The dementia man will have an enjoyable stay with highly trained staff, and the family will be able to have some free time. This may be a good transition to long term care

Six Reasons to Bake Homemade Biscotti for Holiday Gifts

Long before I hear the first Christmas music, long before the shop put up decorations, long before holiday ads appear in the newspaper, I am in biscotti mode. I am already reasoning about the gift biscotti I will make. There are dozens of recipes in my files and they are so good it is hard to conclude which flavors to make.

Cranberry biscotti with walnuts or almonds is an old favorite. The method was on a box of dried cranberries I bought years ago. Since then, the method seems to have disappeared and I am glad I still have it. Orange biscotti with mini chocolate chips is someone else family favorite. I adapted a basic biscotti method and, to bring out the orange flavor, added orange zest and extract.

Holiday

Baking biscotti is fun and if you have never made it, I hope you will try at least once. Make some for yourself and some to give away. Why is biscotti a thoughtful gift?

First, you have hundreds of recipes to pick from. This means you can customize the biscotti. Let's say Aunt Edith loves chocolate. You can make chocolate biscotti with chocolate chips for her. Uncle Fred may love almond and you can make almond biscotti for him.

Second, you can make this Italian "cookie" ahead of time. Biscotti keeps for weeks, so if you want to stir up a batch weeks before Christmas, go ahead and do it. Keep in mind, though, that the flavor may fade a bit. I add an extra half teaspoon of excerpt to ensure good flavor.

Third, you can vary the size. Market biscotti tends to be five to six inches long. Homemade biscotti can be long or you can make mini biscotti that fit on a saucer. The size you make also depends on the storage container.

Fourth, you can make biscotti festive with colored sugar, multi-colored sprinkles, white chocolate drizzle, chocolate frosting, chocolate "shot," or large sugar crystals. Sprinkles are easiest, but I prefer to frost my biscotti. Make sure the frosting has set wholly before you box the cookies. To speed setting, I put the baked and frosted biscotti in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes.

Fifth, you can find beautiful packaging for your beautiful gift. I've purchased decorative jars at the grocery store, practical jars with wide-mouth lids at allowance stores, and plastic packaging are kitchen contribute stores. Stuff wax paper colse to the cookies if you are mailing them. Comprise the method if you wish.

Sixth, a homemade gift says "I'm reasoning about you." The recipient can feel the love and care you put into your baking. Market biscotti is good, but homemade is better.

This year, instead of buying gift containers, I'm re-using tins from Italy that used to Comprise almond cookies. The tall red tins are festive and the family members who receive the biscotti may use the tins to store crackers, cookies, cookies, and pasta. Stumped on holiday gifts? Bake some biscotti for those you love and care about. Every sweet bite will remind them of you.

Thanksgiving Turkey Secrets Revealed: 10 Steps to Make a Juicy Holiday Turkey

Have you all the time wanted to make a juicy turkey but it all the time comes out dry? A juicy bird is not impossible. Some small tips will help your holiday table overflow with joy and a delightful turkey as a centerpiece.

In the case of a long cooking bird, salt is your friend. But most citizen don't comprehend the addition of olive oil is the secret. Regardless of the spices you use to flavor a turkey, whether primary like plain salt or adventurous like adding a itsybitsy kick with salt mixed with cayenne for a Cajun flair, if you oil in three main places first your turkey will be delicious.

Holiday

Where are the three places? Simple. Inside, outside, and under the skin. Most citizen think the skin has adequate fat and barrier to keep the turkey juicy. But the truth is that salt and oil are the magic. Juices are pulled toward salt and the oil acts as a sealant. By treating the turkey inside and under the skin, you've sealed the juices in the meat. By oiling and spicing the skin, it acts like a marinade while the bird is cooking.

The broth that forms is spectacular for gravy, but our family favorite is to use it for an astounding soup base. Refrigerate the broth (or freeze) and skim the layer of fat off before using.

Step 1: Rinse and pat bird dry
Step 2: Pour half a cup of olive oil in a bowl
Step 3: Fill someone else bowl with salt and spices
Step 4: Loosen the skin of the turkey (take off jewelry) except on the legs. Reach under the skin and moderately break it free across the breast. Try not to tear the skin.
Step 5: Fill your hands with olive oil and rub entire bird inside and out and under the skin.
Step: 6: Fill your hands with the spices (heavily mixed with salt) and rub all over bird, inside and out, be sure to spice/salt under the skin as far as you can reach.
Step 7: Stuff Turkey lightly or skip this step.
Step 8: Prep turkey bag by adding 2 tablespoons of flour and shaking before placing in large baking dish. (I use the largest lasagna dish and can commonly do a 20-22 pound bird.
Step 9: Place inside turkey bag and seal.
Step 10: Bake following directions for size of bird on the turkey bag box.

That's it! 10 steps that take a very short time. Now you have a simple, elegant turkey ready for the most beautiful table. But even more, you'll have left overs that won't taste like dry cardboard.

For a spectacular Sage Turkey recipe and great turkey left over recipes, pick up your copy of Creative Cooking for simple Elegance by Angela Breidenbach. It's ready in any place books are sold together with Amazon, Christianbook, and Barnes & Noble.

Why Do We Celebrate Halloween - The Spookiest Holiday Of The Year

Halloween is full of costumes and candy, trick-or-treating and frightful haunted houses, pumpkins and black cats. But just where did Halloween come from? Why are we celebrating?

The history of Halloween goes back 2000 years. Many believe that Halloween's origins are found in the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who were located in Ireland, the Uk and the northern parts of France, preeminent their New Year on the first of November. Samhain was preeminent the night before the New Year.

Holiday

The New Year, Celts believed, marked summer's end, harvest time, and the start of dark, cold winter months. Those winter months were connected with death by these people. On October 31, the night before the New Year, the Celts preeminent Samhain. This day, they believed, was when the ghosts of the deceased returned to earth because the boundaries in the middle of the living world and the dead world blurred.

When we think of "Trick-Or-Treating", the origins can probably be found in the English All Souls' Day parades. During these celebrations, the poor would come out and beg for food from the more wealthy families. When the families gave them pastries called "soul cakes", they asked for the poor to pray for their relatives that had passed away.

Another possibility that may have grown into "Trick-Or-Treating" is the tradition of population leaving bowls of food in front of their homes. They did this to keep the ghosts that were wandering the earth from entering.

Dressing in costumes has a concentrate potential origins. European and Celtic population both felt winter was a frightening time. It was cold, it was darker, and the possibility of running out of food was great. When they reached the time when they understanding the dead returned, they understanding they might encounter these ghosts whenever they left their houses. The wearing of masks and costumes grew from these population donning masks so the ghosts would not identify them!

This holiday was brought to the Us by Scotch and Irish immigrants in the 1800s. At that time, much of the "spookiness" of the holiday was removed and a sense of community and fun were added. Although scary themes are still the focus of many Halloween celebrations, that scariness is done for fun, not because of actual fear.

Halloween is currently the 2nd largest industrial holiday!
